Friends of Blair Mountain and Blair Community Center and Museum are looking for a full time volunteer!
We are looking for a volunteer to live and work at the Blair Community Center and Museum. They will be focusing on preserving Blair Mountain as well as creating a space that will host community events and tourism to Blair.
The volunteer will be given a stipend of $250 a month, which we intend to raise as we grow as an organization. We are looking for someone who can commit to at least 6 months.
Responsibilities
- Keep track of permits on Blair Mountain
- Organize actions against permits (Public hearings, letter writing, call in days, etc)
- Outreach- Local and National- get folks involved in the preservation of Blair Mountain, as well as in the Community Center
- Organize events at Community Center and Museum (Movie showing, work days, BBQ, music, workshops, Blair Mountain tours)
- Staff shifts at Community Center and Museum (Making sure there’s coffee in the morning, helping events run smoothly, welcoming folks into the center/museum)
Qualifications
- Familiar with permit process / committed and excited to learn
- Friendly, interested in meeting new people
- Organized, Self motivated
- A love for the history of the mine wars and Blair Mountain, as well as a love for the people and mountains of Appalachia
- Prior experience community organizing, or living in a rural area
- This is a great opportunity to create a community space that will aid both the struggle to preserve Blair Mountain and the fight for social, labor and environmental justice in central Appalachia.
