The West Virginia mine wars are a significant part of American history that has been systematically ignored.

We should demand recognition for the vital role that these wars played in the American labor struggles. The people of southern West Virgina have been overlooked for too long.

Blair Mountain should be a federaql park along the lines of Harper's Ferry. This would be a chance to bring tourism into the area. It should be a center for peaceful dispute resolution honoring antoher neglected national treasure: Ken Heckler.

Dr. Heckler should be recognized now while we still have the chance to publically acknowledge his storied committment to the American miner

As the "Curator In Exile" of West Virginia's Archaeological Collections" I am very disappointed in Randall Reid-Smith and his Deputy, Susan Pierce. They both should be ashamed of themselves and leave the public sector.

Sorry, but the whole professional world is watching and you two are acting very much like stooges for the coal companies instead of public servants.

SHAME!

Keep up the fight! I've signed up for your newsletter. I only recently started reading up on the Mine Wars (I'm a historian, although mainly mediaeval/18C), and was horrified to discover that Blair Mountain was in danger. To me, besides being an environmental disaster, this looks to me like a deliberate attempt to eradicate physically a vital piece of working class history. The miners' rising is an epic story that deserves to be known more widely. (Most of my US friends haven't heard of it!) I've mentioned it to my regular newspaper here in the UK and am hoping they may write something. - best wishes,
Marianne in Glasgow, Scotland.
